Training Log 19-03-09

Now that I have access to a gym and Olympic bar it's back to lifting some heavy iron!

The plan will be to cycle Power lifting and Olympic Lifting whilst keeping the conditioning going with kettlebell sport training. Going to concentrate on PL for this phase.

Without trying to wallow in nostalgia and the glory days of a 180kg DL, I do need to set a few benchmarks and establish where my training is going and where it should be.

1RM

180kg DL
160kg SQ
36kg DB Bench (no bar benching due to aggravated shoulder)

Today was about getting back into the groove

Crash and burn (with a whimper)

Yes it happened. The crash and burn from my 24 day fitness experiment struck last week, although it was from overtraining and not a spectacular disintegration from my cleaner diet and nutritional habit.

After attacking my 40kg with a bit too much enthusiasm I gave myself lateral epicondylitis, AKA tennis elbow, and have had to rest it. Grr.

Onto better news - in talks with Fitness First St. Albans about starting up PT there and will of course be bringing a full set of bells, workshops have been busy and working on giving this site a complete revamp to reflect the new direction of it.

Day 5, 6 & 7 - bodyweight recovery

Bit disappointed with 24 - they've had a year and a half to rewrite and rework and the best they can do is to bring back the dead and rehash of Die Hard 2? Hmm. And haven't we seen the technomagic McGuffin before?

Anyhoo, hopefully it will get better otherwise I'll have a Monday slot free...

Back to training.

Taking a few days off the bells; daily training is pretty draining, with weights even more so.

Simple supersetting circuits

Jungle Gym pushups
Chin ups

Bodyweight jump squats
MP lunges

Day 4 - More kettlebells. Sensible progression this time!

Which is more than can be said for 24's story line at the moment!

LC clean & jerk, 2 * 24kg, 2, 3, 5, 10 * 3
Ab wheel

Day 3 - Kettlebells. Paring the training down

Just about recovered from Monday so time to ramp things back and build up progressively (and as sensibly I can manage)

Clean & Jerk. 2, 3, 5 and 10 reps, 2 * 24kg
Ab wheel

Plan is to move into Long Cycle later on this week to up the intensity.

Day 2 - Kettlebells? Some exposition...

Having let ego overwhelm common sense during training yesterday, I've been whacked by a severe case of DOMS.

Bugger, bugger, bugger. Sets the planned training back by at least a day so had to do recovery work instead

SMR work with foam roller, stretch, prodding myself with a stick (trying to get The Stick but no joy as they only ship US)

So I've decided to take a few steps back and write about why I use kettlebells so much in my own, and my clients, training.

  • They're quick. Cardio? Check. Strength? Check. Full ROM? Yawn, check.

Day 1 - Kettlebells, 5 * 5 * 5

Time to start this experiment off with some heavy kettlebell training.

I hear potential clients, men and women, tell me why they don't like doing heavy weight training and I suspect it all boils down to the fact they don't like hard work!

Here are some reasons why you should add heavy weight training to your fitness mix

  • Strength makes you better at, well, almost everything
  • Men! Getting strong is good for your physique - if you want to get bigger, then heavy weights combined with increased quality nutrition is the key

24 - The Fitness Experiment

I, as do probably most other testosterone addled males, adore 24. We all want to run round, doing nasty things to nasty terrorists, play with some seriously slick gadgets - a mobile phone that has real time GPS infrared mapping, ooh - useful when out shopping with the missus, and pretend that we too would be hard enough to squeeze a confession out of the most psychotic individuals with nothing but a tube of toothpaste and a cheese grater.
